Sexism in schools has been on the rise in various parts of the world mostly in the past
century. Sexism is the situation whereby a person is discriminated because of their gender and it
can affect anyone. Children begin to notice the difference in what the society expects depending
on their gender roles based on how the teachers interact with them (Jones, 2004). Therefore, the
teachers play a key role in shaping the future trends of sexism in the society. Teachers normally
cause a gender-biased environment mostly unknowingly. Research has shown that teachers
normally pay more attention to some students in the classroom hence causing inequality.
The boys are more mischievous and outspoken than the girls hence they tend to be more
active in class. In addition, the boys tend to be louder than the girls hence are the preference by
the teachers. The favors mostly causes the girls to shy off even when they want to interact in
class. On the other hand, the teachers can also favor the girls who are believed to be more
organized and polite in schools than the boys. The teachers could instill the belief in the boys that
organization and cleanliness is for girls hence causing inequality. However, strategies can be
implemented to reverse the sexism hence creating gender equality. The students can be
encouraged to participate more in class through the application of five main methods by the
education institutions.
The first method is through applying reflection and objectivity in the classroom (Barnes
and Wane, 2000). Teachers should ensure that they study their methods of teaching to determine
whether their responses to the students are gender neutral. Teachers should always reflect on
their classes to ensure that they apply fair treatment to both the girls and the boys during the
lessons. It is difficult for the teachers to assess their performance while they teach. Therefore,
they should record their classes through taking videos so that they can look at them later to
evaluate their interactions. This method of ensuring gender equality is easily applicable in all
types of school settings.
The school administration should set up trainings for the teachers to know how to avoid
sexism in class. The training would help in ensuring that there is a standard set for all the
