Guidelines

Develop:

  • An annotated bibliography that summarizes, critiques, and applies scholarly research on a topic/issue of your choice related to education leadership
  • An APA-compliant reference list of all sources

To complete:Compile an annotated bibliographythat includes a minimum of fiverecent peer-reviewed or refereed research journal articles or chapters from edited books (published within the past 3-5 years) focused on an issue/topic of your choice related to education. For example, the literature you choose to include in your annotated bibliography might address such topics/issues as understanding the relationship between social change and the goals, missions, and objectives of programs; how change can be effected to achieve the best possible learning; or acknowledging the realities that challenge leaders. For each source included on your list, prepare a critical analysis (see below). Each annotation should be about 1-page long. Remember to arrange the citations in alphabetical order.

For each annotation, provide:

  • The correct APA citation.
  • A summary of the study in each resource, including the research question(s), theoretical framework, research method, major findings, and implications. Also, include methodological details as provided by the authors(number of participants, types of participants, and any statistical results or themes depending upon the approach). State whether the details were provided or not.
  • A critical analysis assessing the merits of the resource, citing strengths and limitations, and analyzing the major thesis. Identify which pieces are missing and which are addressed in the articles. Then discuss how aligned the research question is to the existing body of knowledge, the appropriateness of the theoretical or conceptual framework to the study, the sufficiency of the methods and design, the generalizability/transferability of the results in other contexts, and any social change implications.
  • A statement explaining the relevance of the article to your profession and/or research interests. In other words, make sure you articulate a connection between the article and your own work/ideas.

The source elaborates that school leaders, principals to be specific should possess
excellent traits or attributes to accomplish effective leadership. Goolamally and Ahmad
performed a study to establish the appropriate conceptual framework and attributes principals
require in promoting school excellence and leadership sustainability. They came up with a
research question in exploring whether success and excellence can help a school head succeed or
there is a need for special attributes for them to achieve greatness. The researchers also suggested
a conceptual framework which included attributes like credibility and self-efficacy. Qualitative
and quantitative research methods were appropriate for the study in providing comprehensive
results and conclusions. The study used three sets of samples and 244 items that measured the
constructs of the suggested conceptual framework. In the first stage of testing, 1670 respondents
from 83 schools took part. The second stage had 940 participants from 48 schools, and the third
stage included 738 teachers from 39 schools where the authors used the exploratory factor
analysis to analyze data. The findings showed that five essential attributes including integrity;
forward-looking, inspirational leader, competency as well as self-efficacy were relevant. On this
note, the research is quite informative in revealing the traits that school leaders should possess.
However, the main setback is that it is not certain the criteria that researchers used to select the
participants thus creating an informational gap. Nevertheless, the thesis provides a clear
guideline of the research scope thus allowing a reader to understand the study in-depth. The
study includes all the research components that a standard study should have. With that in mind,
the research question provides an in-depth understanding of the established conceptual

framework that can assist in promoting positive change in schools. Altogether, the article is
resourceful since it reveals the essential characteristics principals should have to motivate a
school to excel.
