Data Analytics in the Healthcare Industry
Data analytics is collecting data, analyzing it and turning it into useful information from
which a person can make conclusions (Wang et al., 2018). There are four types of data analytics;
descriptive analytics, diagnostic analytics, predictive analytics, and prescriptive analytics.
Descriptive analytics looks at the happenings of a specific period. Diagnostic analytics looks at
why the events happened. Predictive analytics looks at the future happenings, and finally,
prescriptive analytics tries to look for a solution to the underlying issue. Data analytics happens in
some steps. The first step is to map out the data requirements for the analysis for example when
collecting information about people infected with a virus; the data requirements can be age, gender,
date recorded, symptoms, etc. Data collection comes second; the methods and medium of data
collection are dependent on the person performing the analysis. The third step is data organization;
the researcher can use a spreadsheet or software to organize the data. After the data organization,
the researcher cleans up the data to ensure that there are no duplications. Lastly, data analysis
where the researcher makes conclusions from the data gathered. Most companies in every industry
use data analytics to get information that aids in the decision-making process. This paper looks at
how data analytics applies to the healthcare industry.
The healthcare industry embraced the use of technology, and over the past years, that
decision has seen the industry come up with better methods of prevention and treatment (Belle et
al., 2015). Technology also plays a big role in data analytics in the present day. Hospitals don’t
have to peruse through all the files of patients admitted into the hospital, each hospital has a
computer system where patient information gets stored. Doctors,...
