Extinguishing Classically Conditioned Fear Responses
Classical conditioning refers to the process in which there is an association between the
environmental stimulus and a naturally occurring stimulus. It involves the process of first
understanding a neutral signal of a certain stimulus before it occurs. Therefore through the
process of classical conditioning, an individual can predict a fear that is about to occur before it
actually occurs and responds effectively (Eelen, 2018). One of the methods of extinguishing
classically conditioned fears is by desensitization which involves the process of slowly and
continuously re-exposed to a conditioned stimulus. The other method of extinguishing classically
conditioned fears is disassociation of the environmental and the natural stimulus (Eelen, 2018).
