Procrastination is a big problem for most people in modern society. When tabling any
debate about procrastination, the first and most significant question that should cross people’s
mind is: Why do individuals procrastinate? This question is likely to open up many answers
about the topic, while at the same time bringing out important issues that should be discussed.
Procrastination is regarded as major factor that hinders development, since most individuals fail
to perform as per their laid down targets. Finding out the reasons as to why people procrastinate
is also useful as it would help individuals strategize on how to avoid such. Secondly, this
question would open up to a significant level of understanding of the advantages and
disadvantages of procrastination (Klingsieck, 2013). Psychologists believe that there are several
as to why people procrastinate. Such reasons include: lacking a sense of self-drive, depression,
hindrance by anxiety, or being intolerant to certain levels of discomfort. Most importantly,
procrastination can come as a result of having poor planning habits, or skewed estimates of time.
Even so, to get the most appropriate answer to the question highlighted above, it would be
essential to analyze the definition of procrastination from various approaches.
What is procrastination?
Procrastination is the gap between action and intention. It is an act of putting off
something that should be done at a specific time. It can be put off either habitually or
intentionally, but the result is that the task would not be accomplished at a specific given time.
Procrastination is also the art of ignoring certain jobs, with a prepared mind that one would do
them later (Ludwig, & Schicker, 2018). Most probably, this results from laziness. For instance, if
a person has a task ahead of them to accomplish, with certain levels of laziness, they are more
likely to postpone the work for following schedules. However, from critical analysis, others
