GEOG 130 Online Activity 2: Mapping of Fossil Fuels Introduction: Even though there are concerns in terms of use and exploitation, the world is still dependent on fossil fuels. In this activity you’ll look at US and global distributions of these resources and their production. Objectives: ✓ Identify the locations of coal and oil shale in the Continental US ✓ Compare and contrast which countries and regions are the largest producers of petroleum, natural gas and coal Part 1: Coal and oil Shale locations in the Continental US Instructions: Create the three maps below in ArcGIS Online and take a screenshot of each. There are no questions to answer in Part 1, just provide the screenshots of your maps! • Map 1: Continental US Oil and Coal Fields o Add the following two layers to your map view by searching the Living Atlas Layers for ▪ USA Oil Shale Basins (by Esri) – use the one that was updated on 11/14/2016 (multi-colored map) ▪ USA Coal Fields (by Esri) – use the one that was updated on 9/20/2018 (gray colored map) o Take a screenshot of your map and paste below: • Map 2: North Dakota Fracking Wells o Uncheck the two layers you added for the first map (don’t remove them! Just uncheck them). Now search the ArcGIS Online layers option (not living atlas) for the following layer: ND_Fracking_Wells (by bpost_UMN) o Zoom into the region of North Dakota where the points are located o Take a screenshot of your map and paste below: • Map 3: North Dakota Fracking Pads o In the upper left portion of the ArcGIS Online screen, find the “Basemap” button. Click on it to change the basemap to “Imagery” – the first option in the list. o Identify an area where there are a lot of points and zoom into the image until you can actually see the fracking pads. They look like square, bare dirt areas within the green fields. You can also see some equipment, automobiles and roads leading up to the pad. o Take a screenshot of an area showing fracking pads and paste below: Part 2: Global fossil fuel production Instructions: Please visit the EIA International Mapping site: https://www.eia.gov/beta/international/ • • • Click through the current year’s maps for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Coal. Also note for each energy source type, you can also click on “production”, “consumption”, etc. directly below the map. Please fill in the table and then respond to the questions below. Please use a distinct font color or highlighting of your responses to the questions so I can identify them within the document. List the top three countries in each category in the table below: Petroleum Natural Gas Coal Production Consumption Reserves & Capacity Imports Exports Questions: 1.
