Introduction
The most far-reaching investigative political White House Scandal of the 20th century
started with a seemingly innocuous burglary on the 6th floor of an office complex, and a plush
apartment called the Watergate in the fashionable Northwest Section of Washington, DC. A
story on the front page of the Washington Post on Sunday morning, June 18, 1972; was
headlined “5 Held in Plot to Bug Democrats’ Office Here”, with the byline of the paper’s
veteran police reporter, Alfred E. Lewis.

The major events of the Watergate Scandal
The Watergate Scandal had been a major scandal on the political fronts that had taken
place in the U.S. during the early 1970s. The Watergate Scandal began with the discovery of
5 men with sophisticated eavesdropping equipment, $2300 in cash, and cameras broke into
the offices of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate Complex, (Wittekind,
2012). The group of five men was apprehended by 3 Metropolitan D.C. police officers after a
building security guard noticed that a lock on one of the doors was taped.
The scandal was considered to be no ordinary burglary. All of the prowlers had been
connected to the re-election campaign of President Richard Nixon. These five burglars had
