1 HIST 2020: American History II Paper II: Research Essay The second writing assignment is: Research Essay. It requires the research of a topic of your choice dealing with American history in the post-Reconstruction period (i.e., 1877-present). The paper will be written and submitted in two stages as indicated below: FIRST STAGE: RESEARCH ESSAY PROPOSAL The first stage is a one-page proposal of your topic for the research essay. Statement of purpose
This essay is about the struggles the African Americans faced as a result of the Jim Crow
laws that were operational in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This paper’s specific focus is
on how the Jim Crow laws made the lives of the African American people extremely difficult.
We shall address the deprivation of African Americans the same rights accorded to Whites, the
black codes that treated the blacks as inferior by limiting their freedoms, the segregation of
African Americans from whites in public spaces and how racism was perpetuated and how it is
still an issue for blacks even in modern times. According to Edwards and Thompson (2010), the
Jim Crow laws were meant to define, control and enforce social practices in the early 19th
century.

The Jim Crow laws were local and state laws that made segregation of races mandatory
