With a pair of dice, find the probability of rolling a 5 and a 9 before two 7's. Please show your work.

the possible scores for the various rolls are

7 = (1,6)or(2,5)or(3,4)or(4,3)or(5,2)or(6,1)

5 = (1,4)or(2,3)or(3,2)or(4,1)

9 = (3,6)or(4,5)or(5,4)or(6,3)

the probability for each roll is 1/6 (arrived at from dividing 1 by the total possible events which is 6)

therefore the probability of :-

7 is (1/6*1/6)*6 =1/6

5 is (1/6*1/6)*4 = 1/9

9 is (1/6*1/6)*4 = 1/9

therefore the probability of a (7 and 7 and 5 and 9) is given obtaining the product of the various event probabilities

=1/6*1/6*1/9*1/9 = 1/2916 = 0.03429%

NB

"or" in probability means addition

"and" in probability means multiplication
