The China-U.S. Trade Wat puts Chinses International Students into
If you lived in China during 2000-2009, it was hard to image that a student can study in a U.S.
university. Only wealthy families can afford high tuition. However, in recent ten years, more and
more parents are willing to send their children to U.S. for better education.
In the graph, it shows the number of Chinese students in U.S. from 2007/ 08 to 2017/ 18. According
to Statista, there are over 363 thousand Chinese international students study in U.S. universities.
It grows over 129% during those year. The number of Chinese international students takes onethird of total number of U.S. international students.
According to another research on IIE, “International students contributed $ 39.4 billion to the U.S.
economy in 2016, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce,” “About 67 percent of all
international students receive the majority of the funds from sources outside of the United States.
It is surprised that the U.S. government consider limiting the visa of Chinese students, due to trade
In Financial Times, it reported that the Trump administration considered banning all Chinese
students from the United States in earlier 2018, which is the beginning time of trade war. People
may just think that the trade war is an economic competition between two countries; however, they
never relate it with the students. The purpose of the trade war, according to the Trump
administration, is to reduce the trade deficit and give a punishment to China for theft U.S.
companies’ intellectual property. However, as the aggressive policy by Trump, the purpose of the
trade war has been vague. Whatever the Trump’s purpose of those policy, those are threating the
Chinese international students.
The one reason is that the U.S. government considered China using student spies to steal secrets.
“ The government considers imposing tighter vetting measure on student
The first genre I choose is webpage article. The target audiences are the Chinese international students
and their parents. During the last five years, more and more Chinese students prefer to study in a U.S.
university/ college which can provider them a better education. However, the trade war broke the
relationship between China and U.S., which puts the Chinese international students into an embarrassed
situation. In this genre, I want to explore the risks of study in U.S. for the Chinses students who want to
come to U.S. for college, and the students who have already been studied in U.S. During the trade war,
there are many news and articles about the U.S. government will limit the Chinese students visa; the
Chinese international students will be considered as spy from China. I want to write a webpage article that
combines two ideas from those news and articles and mean time explore some potential risks. And also,
for their parents, the exchange rate between Chinese yuan and U.S. dollar has been increased, which
means studying in U.S. become more expensive comparing with past years. The webpage I choose is call
China Daily, which is a website that writing the articles in English. In China, this is hard to find foreign
website, because of the firewall. Therefore, the China Daily is a best website to share this idea. In the
website, there is a section called China-US, which contains the article about the relationship between China
and U.S. In order to improve English skill, most of the Chinese students are likely to read the China Daily,
so it is a wide spread way to share the article. Moreover, even some Chinese parents cannot read the article
in English, the students are willing to share with their parents. And also, for this genre, I need to find some
new source and some cases that the Chinese international students are threatened by the trade war.
