f(x)= -2x^2 - 4x - 1

The coefficient of x² is -2 (negative) so 

1. the quadratic has a maximum value

2) completing the square gives f(x) = -2( x+ 1)² + 1

so 2. maximum value occurs when x + 1 = 0, that is when x = -1

3) The maximum value is  f (-1) = 0 + 1 = 1    ( when we put x = -1)
