Suicide bombing is one of the most popular terrorist tactics used today. While most of the world sees this tactic as barbaric and cannot understand why anyone would agree to using this tactic, there is a school of thought that justifies its use.

Riaz Hassan is an Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow and Emeritus Professor in the Department of Sociology, Flinders University. In January 2010, he wrote a piece titled Life as a Weapon: Making Sense of Suicide Bombings.

  1. In a well-written paper:
    • a. Write an essay outlining the justifications for suicide bombing as discussed by Mr. Hassan. In addition find an example of an actual suicide terrorism incident, describe the circumstances and compare and contrast those circumstances with M. Hassan's piece.
    • b. Make sure your discussion reflects themes in Chapters 5 through 6 of our textbook.
  2. Your papers must:

      • ii. The second page will include an Abstract.
      • iii. This paper will use 1-inch margins, Times New Roman 12-point font, and double spacing.

Suicide Bomber Justification
Abstract
Terrorism has led to a lot of death and destruction, especially to the Western world, hence
many people are visibly concerned for their safety. However, a new form of attacks used by
terrorist groups to carry out their attacks and this involves sacrificing their own lives. One
example of such an attack is the infamous September 11 attack on the United States. I n this
essay, we seek to justify the suicidal acts of the terrorists. Despite many world leaders attributing
terrorism to Islamic fanaticism, studies indicate that the suicidal attacks are resulting from a
political aspect rather than from religious aspect. In order to fully comprehend the dynamics of
suicide attacks, it is essential to first understand what can drive an individual into committing
suicide. According to studies conducted by Mr. Hassan for more than forty years, individuals
who commit suicide seek achievement of multiple ends such as seeking to be redeemed while
facing damnation. A majority of these terrorists are psychologically sound and an emotional
bond to their societies. This means that labelling suicide bombers as sick or mad is not quite
accurate and thus sets the society on the wrong track on learning the truth behind suicide
bombing and how to deal with the issue so as to avoid similar attacks in the future. Mr. Hassan
states three aspects that play a crucial role in shaping and organizing the subculture which
promotes suicide attacks; namely revenge, humiliation, altruism and revenge. It is evident that
