The passage of the 19th Amendment event was a particularly important event in Alice
Paul’s life because for a long time she had fought for women’s suffrage and the amendment was
the culmination of her fight and advocacy. The 19th amendment of 1920 was a very significant
amendment as it granted women the right to vote. It reinforced the principles of the 15th
amendment which made it unlawful for the government to take away from the US citizens their
right to vote. For the better part of her life, Alice had dedicated her life towards fighting for the
rights of women through advocating for a national constitutional amendment that would give
women a right to take part in elections through voting. She was a crucial force in the passing and
enactment of the Nineteenth Amendment. In her spirited fight for equality, she in 1923 came up
with a proposal for a constitutional amendment on the Equal Rights Amendment. In spite of the
fact that she did not live long to witness the ERA included in the constitution, she got an equal
rights declaration incorporated in the preamble to the United Nations Charter (Lunardini). This
article seeks to present the significance of Alice Paul and her role in the women suffrage
movement.
Women in the 19th century were faced with a number of problems. One of those
challenges was that they were denied the right to vote. Only men were allowed to participate in
choosing their leaders (Becker). They could also not join many of the American colleges, and
