Miss Brill’s literacy analysis
Introduction
Miss Brill is a story authored by Katherine Mansfield through the creation of metaphor of
Miss Brill’s characters being the actress while the world is the stage. The entire story is an illusion
that describes her to be a character in all fields since she fears to be the individual that she isn’t
and that doesn’t portray her real personality. Also, instead of her having confidence with her true
self she hides her real emotion by taking a teacher’s role.
Thesis: The analysis covers the story of Miss Brill and her allusions through taking
different characters it a stage presumed to be the entire universe and arriving at a theme of
abandonment and isolation.
Body
To hide the fear of being denied and reject, Miss Brill assumes loneliness as a protective
tool that covers her real personality. “They were all on stage. They weren’t only the audience And yet it explained why she made such a point of starting from home each week the same time –

to avoid arriving late for the performance” (Mansfield 185). The quote is an indication of how
desperately Ms. Brill was inputting a performance since she felt as if through acting people might
accept her as the individual she is and not the pretense she assumes and makes people believe it’s
