Read introduction to fiction, pages 16-20.

Read about narrator (169-73), theme (429-33), characterization (210-17), setting (282-88) and symbolism (380-85).

Then read Jamaica Kincaid's story, "Girl" (675), Bharati Mukherjee's "The Management of Grief" (478), and Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Birth-Mark" (385). [Please note: in the interest of time we will not be reading "Gooseberries," "A Pair of Tickets," or "The House Asterion."]

Introduction
Symbolism is an important part of literature. It involves using symbols to signify=y
qualities and ideas. In general, it is the use of an object to represent another, to offer an entirely
different and deeper meaning. Bharati Mukherjee, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Jamaica Kincaid
are examples of authors who have used symbolism significantly to express their ideas in
literature.
Symbolism plays an important part in Mukherjee’s “Management of Grief.” The author
uses symbolism to demonstrate Mrs. Bhave’s love for her family. Mrs. Bhave never told her
husband that he loved her at any one point. After her husband and sons die in a plane crash, she
is regretting not expressing her love to her family and looks for a way to do it. When she sees Dr.
Ranganathan throw pink roses into the sea as a way of remembering his wife, Mrs. Bhave thinks
of things she could float on the water as a way to remember her family too. She thinks of the
things her family would need. Among these is a poem she had written for him in the hospital the
day before, this poem is a symbol of her love for her husband.
Kincaid’s story, “Girl” is filled with symbolism. The entire story is a symbol of an
