Introduction
Defining culture

Culture refers to the way of life of a given society and is passed down from one generation to
another. A society on the other hand is a group of people who are living together. Culture is
therefore used to define a particular society. Culture includes various factors such as way of
speaking, way of dressing, religious practices, rituals, arts, behavior, beliefs and even the form of
government or leadership. Culture comprises instructions and rules in a given society that guide
people on how they are supposed to live with each other (Eliot, 2010).
Characteristics of culture
Culture exists in people’s minds. This means that culture is not tangible and is a belief which
is passed from generation to generation. Culture can vary significantly from one people to
another. This means that various people have various cultures. Although cultures may be
different, they are sometimes similar in various aspects for example the belief in supernatural
beings. Another characteristic of culture is that it tends to change over time. This means that
culture is dynamic. The culture of a given people fifty years ago is not the same culture today.
Nobody in the society is free from culture. It is therefore expected that all people in a given
society are bound by the culture (Padden, 2009).
Functions of culture
Culture enables people to communicate with each other in a given society. If culture did not
exist, then it would be very hard for people to communicate. Culture is important because it
helps in anticipating the actions of other people. C...
