Introduction: Penal Institutions
 The

US Correctional System: Agency
networks that administer correctional
services, community based programs and
prisons (Correctional Officer.org, n.d).
 These agencies basically act as
supervision centers for incarcerated
individuals.
 They Implement probation, parole, and
most importantly rehabilitation.

Differences between jails and
prisons
 Jails

are primarily used as centers for

holding individuals that are yet to be tried
while prisons hold convicted individuals.
 Length

of stay: The length of stay for

persons in jail is shorter compared to that
of imprisoned individuals.

Jails Vs Prisons Cont.
 Jails

are run by local government or law
enforcement agencies while prisons are
run by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and
the State Government.
 Jails offer work- release, educational,
boot camps, substance abuse and
vocational programs while prisons services
are based on the inmate’s custody levels.

Jails Vs Prisons Cont.
 Jails

are not as developed as prisons
because they offer services to transient
populations hence the reason they are
less developed.
 Prisons are fully developed to provide all
the human needs necessary given they
are designed for long term incarceration.
 As such, inmates prefer staying in prison as
opposed to staying in jail.

Probation: A suspense of sentence or a conditional
release of the offender from police custody for as

Officer.org, n.d).

Parole Vs. Probation Cont.

From the definitions, parole is more
administrative in nature while probation is
more determinative (Champion, 2002).

Technically, probation is an alternative to
having to be jailed while parole is a release
(conditional) from jail/prison (Champion,...
