In the 21st century, the United State can be characterized by increased expenditure on
health services. Health is a major driver in the productivity of a human being. However, the
prices in the expenditure can be estimated to be increasing at a rate of about fifteen percent per
annum. Currently, the health care expenditure attribute for about nine percent on the GDP. The
cost of health care in the United States is becoming unsustainable and need to be addressed. The
economy of the United States can be characterized as being in danger due to the increased health
care expenditure. Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) is known for focusing on how to address the
unsustainability in the health care costs in the United States (United States. Congressional
Budget Office, 2007). BPC has been focusing on the best way of addressing the increasing costs
of health care expenditures. For the purpose of this paper, we will focus on both the United
States and China which are the leading countries in the world to review the expenditure towards
health care. The main aspect will be to compare and contrast the major drivers on the increasing
health care expenditures in the two countries. Both China and the United States have some
similarities and differences in the drivers for health expenditures that need to be addressed to
improve the economy.
The aging population is the major driver in both the United States and China. The two
countries are characterized by a high population above sixty-five years (Fong, Ng, & Yuen,
