DATA EXERCISE #2

2
Part 1: The Unemployment Rate

The employment situation that has been summarized is for the month of March in the
year 2019. The unemployment rate in March 2019 was equal to 3.8 percent. The unemployment
rate in March was the same as the unemployment rate in February. This is an indication that the
unemployment rate did not increase4.
The employment rates for adult women in the month of March was equal to 3.3 percent.
In the month of March Teenagers had the highest unemployment rate of 12.8 percent. With
regard to racial categorization, Blacks had the highest unemployment rate of 6.7 percent,
Hispanics had the second highest unemployment rate of 4.7 percent and lastly, the whites had an
unemployment rate of 3.4 percent. In comparison to the unemployment rate experienced in the
month of February, the unemployment rates among major groups in the month of March
remained unchanged4.
The factors that make it difficult to be able to determine the unemployment rate include
the presence of part-time employed workers as well as workers who are discouraged. This is so
since it is difficult to ascertain whether they are employed or not.
Unemployment is an economic problem simply because it results in loss of potential
output from a given country. This is so since employment workers are the ones who contribute to
the production output when they are employed. This implies that unemployment results in the
economy of a given country operating below its possibility curve6.
None economic effect of unemployment includes an increased level of poverty since
people will end up having no income, loss of self-respect which is attributed to the need to make
both ends meet which usually results in individuals being open to taking up on anything that will
enable them to generate cash, as well as family disintegration6.
