Reliance on formal authority or coercion should be the option of last resort.

Pros -

1. When absolutely required, it tends to produce immediate results

2. Possibility of its existence sometimes acts as a motivation for subordinates to work

Cons -

1. It may reduce efficiency on an average

2. People might not feel comfortable in approaching a leader who relies on coercion. Hence the leader may loose contact with his followers
