When you are  "mandated to work 7 days a week" and paid overtime work accordingly,  do you feel that your rights were violated?  Are there penalties imposed whenever you refuse a mandated overtime work?

I work in the retail industry; a retail store to be specific. Due to the nature of operation of retail stores, all staff are required to work ten and half hours a day 6 days a week.This scenario is similar to the stated scenario above in that labour laws require one to work for a maximum hours a day. Due to this all staff are paid two and half overtime hours a day. No staff is at liberty to leave work after the elapsing of the standard eight hours.

I have mixed feelings concerning this policy. One, I am to the opinion that overtime hours should be left to the employees to choose at will. Employees should have the freedom to choose the amount of overtime hours they wish to work after working for their standard hours.Therefore, there should not be any penalization or punishment for employees who choose not to work overtime.

On the other side of the employer, imposition of mandatory overtime is necessary. As long as their exists a contractual agreement between the employer and the employee,every employee must adhere to the agreed overtime hours and conditions. This restriction allows the employer to plan on human resource consistently since left on their own to choose, the employer would suffer an influx of employees on overtime on certain days and shortage of employees on other days.

Therefore I think imposition of mandatory overtime is fair if its agreed upon by the employer and employee.
