OUTLINE
Health Care Insurance in Canada
Introduction
➢ This paper will focus on different aspects of healthcare insurance in Canada, including how it
compares to other countries like the United States, the different healthcare insurance plans
offered in different regions in Canada, as well as the medical problems they cover and the
adversities associated with Canadian health care insurance.
➢ Canada Health Care Insurance (CHI) offers a wide range of health insurance plans for
individuals where they can access personalized health insurance plans or coverage that best
matches their budget and needs.
➢ Many people believe that the US healthcare insurance is more accessible and hence better, but
Canada offers cheaper health insurance coverage, hence fulfilling the primary purpose of
healthcare insurance; provision of affordable care.
➢ The healthcare system in Canada is universal, covering its citizens, permanent residents,
protected persons and refugee claimants; while emergency medical services are of fered for
free. A health insurance card from one’s territory of residence is essential for them to receive
medical care in any province within the country.
➢ There are however gaps that exist depending on territory. The public health plan may not cover
some areas, hence the need for personal or private health insurance plans, especially when their
employers fail to chip in. Canada offers three main personal health insurance plans; basic plan,
standard plan and enhanced plan.
Conclusion
➢ Even though it is cheaper, one negative with Canada’s healthcare insurance is the longer wait
times patients experience, and even though Canada set out to correct this issue in 2005, the fact
that general healthcare is free makes it look like an ‘elective’ option.
