Some parents refuse to have their children vaccinated. Should these parents be forced to vaccinate their children in order to protect the rest of society against the reemergence of killers, such as polio?

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

Forcing people to vaccinate is not the best option unless it is a crisis situation. The reasos why the parents have not vaccinated, their doubts and concern must be addressed.

Despite many cases of polio in Pakistan, some parents in NWFP in particular refuse to vaccinate because they think:

1. It could do more harm than good

2. They feel that the American initiative is a conspiracy because of the drone attacks and involvement in Afghanistan has lead to mistrust.

Hence, the reasons and concerns of parents must be dealt with and if they are satisfied, they will vaccinate. But forced vaccination in modern times is not a realistic option.

Please let me know if you need any clarification. I'm always happy to answer your questions.

Thanks for the response. But my question was geared towards this happening in the united states.

Ok but the same arguments apply. Why is the person not vaccinating: ignorance, mistrust, lack of time, too far or too inconvenient? Would some monetary inducement help? Again the reasons and concerns must be dealt with. You cannot force people to vaccinate unless it is an emergency sotuation: the carrot is normally more successful than the stick.
