Legalization of Marijuana Nepotism: Annotated Bibliography
Wood, M., & Emert, P. R. (2019). Under fire.
The legalization of Marijuana is one of the most controversial debates not only in the
United States but also throughout the whole world. Though most western countries are
warming up to the idea of making cannabis sativa a legal drug that’s easily obtainable,
the legalization process for the plant isn’t in its entirety since it comes with a host of
regulations in most cases. An article written by Michael Barbella documents the
controversy surrounding the legalization of marijuana in New Jersey. The article is
contained in the Legal Eagle, a legal Newspaper for Kids in the state of New Jersey in the
issue of spring, 2019, which makes it a relatively updated piece.
According to Michael Barbella’s article featured in the Legal Eagle’s spring issue of
2019, the State of New Jersey hasn’t been spared controversy in its quest to become only
the eleventh state in the United States to legalize marijuana for legal use. Barbella cites
the fact that the proposal by the state’s governor Murphy to legalize marijuana though
popular by about 60%, still faces considerable criticism from those who believe
legalization is only more likely to cause more harm than good to the state of New Jersey.
Though legalized in 28 states across the country as a medicinal plant, only ten states have
approved the drug for use as a recreational drug.
Within the state of New Jersey, the majority of the population including its leadership
especially Governor Phil Murphy supports the legalization of marijuana for recreational
use (6 out of 10). However, the opposition to the proposal for legalization is as strong as
the proponents of the issue and continue to gain grounds daily. By presenting figures for
