Definition of Ecotourism

Ecotourism is also referred to as sustainable tourism. Though the definition of the term
ecotourism involves several practices, it is narrowed down to general ideas. Eco-tourists usually
travel in a manner that displays respect to the environment with no aspects of degradation. In
other terms, ecotourism refers to a response or sustainable travel to natural places that promote
conservation of the environment, sustainable well-being of individuals living in the area, and the
involvement of education and interpretation (Duffy, 2013). The education included involves
learning among the guests and the staff. Ecotourism is considered to be an environmental
conservation practice and a way of understanding the needs of the individuals who live in the
local community of the area to help them in improving the quality of life that they live. Several
aspects are learned in practice especially the history of the area and preservation of the
landmarks.
Ecotourism Organizations
Several organizations are concerned with ecotourism on the global level such as the
International Ecotourism Society (TIES) and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. TIES is a
membership organization that was developed in 1990. It is considered to be the oldest and the
largest ecotourism organization worldwide. It is dedicated to generate and disseminate
information regarding ecotourism. The organization encourages responsible and sustainable
travels to natural places that promote conservation of the environment and the improvement of
the well-being of the people in the locality (Chiu et al., 2014). Global Sustainable Tourism
Council (GSTC) is considered as a non-profit organization that is unique in defining
sustainability and setting global standards in tourism and travel. GSTC serves as a global
