Find an equation of the line that passes through the points. (-1, -2) and (4, - 5)

Oct 12th, 2015

Hello, continuing

now we must calculate the slope m first before getting an equation for the line

y= mx+b

       -2  -5    -1  -4

m= (y1-y2)/(x1-x2)

substituting these values

        (-2-(-5))/((-1)-(4))

          (-2+5)/ (-1-4)

              3/(-5)

m= -3/5

now to find the slope intercept

y=mx+b

-2=(-3/5)*(-1)+b

-2=3/5+b

-2-3/5=b

now simplify the fraction -3/5 by multiplying the numerator and the denominator by 2

also remember 2= 20/10

-2-(6/10)=b

(-20/10)-6/10=b

-26/10=b

-13/5=b

substituting final values into y=mx+b gives:

Answer: y=(-3/5)x-(13/5)
