How would you use your leadership power to approach a situation where an assistant principal or manager that you are in charge of is using too much coercive power?

Changing a 45  year old's leadership style is next to impossible. Instead of trying to change them, it would be better to introduce the manger to additional methods of managing. Most people who are coercive are task oriented instead of relationship oriented. You might try to introduce the coercive manager to a couple of new styles such as the affilitative style(which explains that the leader is hard on people because he or she cares - thus softening the coerciveness) or the democratic style (which allows others to take on some of the managers "people" rsponsibilities, this will allow the manager to have less contact with people thereby lowering the number of abrasive contacts). If your relationship with the subordinate is good, simply talk to them and explain how you would like to see less coersion and more alternative styles used.
