A survey of families reveal that 58% eat turkey on holiday's, 44% eat ham, and 86% have turkey or ham to eat at holiday meals.

1. construct contingency table

2. What probability that a family had turkey and ham?

3. what probability that a family selected at random had ham given they had turkey at their holiday meal?

4. what probability that a family neither had ham nor turkey for their holiday meal?

5. Are having ham and having turkey disjoint events? Explain.

What is the probability that a family selected at random had neither turkey nor
ham at their holiday meal?
P(neither ham nor turkey)
= 1 - P(ham or turkey)
= 1 - [P(ham) + P(turkey) - P(ham andturkey)]
= 1 - [0.44 + 0.58 - 0.16] = 1 - 0.86 = 0.14
or using Venn Diagram at right, 14%.

What is the probability that a family selected at random had only ham without
having turkey at their holiday meal?
P(ham only) = P(ham) - P(ham and turkey) = 0.44 - 0.16 = 0.28
or using Venn Diagram above, 28%

What is the probability that a randomly selected family having turkey had ham at
their holiday meal?
P( ham[ turkey)=0.16/0.58=0.2759

Are having turkey and having ham disjoint events? Explain.
No, since some families (0.16) have both ham and turkey at their holiday meals.
