Doing Criticism Playsheet, M03
Objectives:
1. Understand some of the basic parts of the process of criticism, including Description, Analysis, Interpretation and
Evaluation.
2. Use the Types of Argument to make claims about artifacts.
3. Explore reasons for choosing a method of analysis.
4. Reflect on your work environment and the nuts and bolts of assembling and organizing your notes and sources.
Working Vocabulary: Description, Analysis, Interpretation, Evaluation, Search Model, Argument by Example, by
Analogy, from Cause, from Sign, from Principle, from Authority, Writing Nuts and Bolts.
Why does Description help
overcome “glandular”
criticism?

Description helps in determining whether a particular speech is rhetoric and hence
identifies the major areas on which the criticism will be focused on.

How is Description not just
“retelling” the message?

Description helps in understanding the content in the speech and summarizing the
major areas that are of during the analysis process.

What are likely things a
rhetorical critic would
describe? Identify several.

The audience, the persuasive potential of the author and any constraints they faced.

What are the goals of critical
Analysis?
What is a “search model” and
why will it be useful to you?
In Stoner and Perkins’
analysis of the smoking rights
ad, what are the two main
points of analysis, and do you
agree with their conclusions?

Identify the accuracy of the research done in completing a speech or other
context.
Understanding the author’s knowledge on the topic of discussion.
Identifying the various persuasion tools in writing.

A search model helps in identifying any major persuasion proofs used in a writing
and also any relevant information needed during analyzing. They help in saving on
time by singling out any unnecessary information.

Why should your Analysis be
thorough before working on
Interpretation?

The picture in an advertisement prompts critical thinking among the product
users.
• The words used to highlight any dangers associated with smoking.
I agree with their conclusion that advertisements should be in line with the products
which are been advertised and they highlight the major consequences and benefits of
partaking in a product. This captures the consumers’ attentions and emotions.
When doing interpretation one should balance the judgment and the understanding
the content. Judgment deals with determining the successes and failures of a content
artifact. Understanding takes place when the content is presented. No personal
reactions should be presented during analysis but rather every information presented
should be based on the content been analyzed.
Analysis determines the information presented in speech and how effective a
particular judgment has been used. The analysis determines the major uses of
rhetoric artifacts and how they have influenced the writing.

What are Stoner and Perkins’
key interpretations of the
smoking rights ad? Do you
agree?

The ad has effectively associated smoking to a habit that is scorned by many people.
Hence when the users start smoking despite the confidence they feel they have due
to the smoker’s right advertisement, some cultural beliefs cannot be changed by
advertisements.

What are we balancing when
doing Interpretation? Do we
bring our personal reactions?

What is the difficulty you face
in evaluating messages?

Understanding the original meaning a particular piece of information. Sometimes the
messages are open ended such that the can be interpreted in diverse ways. It is hard
identifying the specific aim of the author when they were writing the message.

What are some evaluation
terms that you might use for a
final evaluation of an artifact?

The evaluation should contain the academic context of the information been studied,
the ethical principles that have been employed in the writing and the political
contribution of the writing.

Do you agree with Stoner and
Perkins’ final evaluation of
the smokers rights artifact?
Why or why not?

I agree with them that despite how appealing an advertisement can be it still cannot
change inbuilt cultural practices in the community. The Smoker rights ad assumes
people will change their beliefs concerning smoking, however; this is not likely to
change.

What are the six types of
arguments available to the
rhetorical critic?

Which of these do you think
you might use more often
when writing a critical paper?

What factors should you
consider when deciding on a
“search model” or a method of
analysis?

Deductive Arguments
Inductive Arguments
Validity
Soundness
World disclosing
Informal Logic

Deductive and Inductive reasoning are mostly use din critical writing. This si
because a person needs to analyze information fro different sources and come up
with the relevant conclusion. Also, the conclusion should be supported by various
evidence of the information presented.

The audience
The purpose of the analysis
The medium through which the information is presented.
The context of the communication

What are the nuts and bolts of
how you take notes and
organize your ideas? Have
you outlined any papers?

When taking notes a person needs to determine the central idea of a speech or even
the article they are reading. Then identifying the relevant topic which sums up the
information presented. The person should also highlight the major points that exist in
the writing. Yes, I have outlined some papers.

Post this…Which of the four
aspects of criticism
(Description, Analysis,
Interpretation, Evaluation) do
you struggle with the most?
Why? OR

Evaluation is the major aspects of c...
