Historic preservation refers to conservation of the existence of the elements of history to
a community. The historic elements of a community include structures such as; industrial
buildings, houses, bridges, manmade structures among others (Kahlo, 2004). The historic
elements can generally be grouped as; landscapes, neighborhoods, land features and culture.
Landscapes are historically valuable as they act as a window into the past. An example is
the Tuscan landscape of hilltop villages. The landscape is enclosed in vines and olive groves a
