The main challenge of this assignment is the attempt to be an active listener, as opposed to a passive one, as we make connections between the music and our emotions, moods, and self. Instructions: The students will each make their own choice of music or music performance to write about. Additionally, each student will bring in a recording on a CD, or email a link of their chosen music piece to the instructor. Feel free to go to a music venue for this assignment if you are able to arrange it. Section 2 Give a short history of the genre of music (bluegrass, jazz, etc.), but please don't quote Wikipedia. Section 3 Give an overview of the performance/of the music piece chosen - its highs and lows, the overall quality, if there were any surprises. 4 Section 4 Describe the music in detail using the above musical vocabulary in your descriptions. You will have time to introduce your short audio of your music choice and will be able to read from this part of your write-up. Include the titles of the music piece/s, describe the sound, the musicians, the lyrics (if there were any), and/or specific instruments. Analyze what your heard. Evaluate the music. Did you connect to it? Why, or why not? Tell about any personal experience related to this event or type of music? How does the music inspire you? Section 7 Helpful Information: Some of the vocabulary words to help you with the descriptions in this assignment include the following formal elements of music to listen for and make note of: 1) Tone or pitch - is the sound high or low? 2) Dynamics - is the sound loud or soft? 3) Melody - a series of musical tones in a shape the ear can recognize. Think of the repeating melody of "Jingle Bells." 4) Rhythm - the pattern of stressed and unstressed notes 5) Form - is the piece an art song? A ballad? A sonata? A hymn? 6) Instruments - is there an entire orchestra involved? Is there just one instrument featured? 7) Style - does the music fall into a particular style: jazz, classical, country, rock, hip-hop, other?
