Motivation as a Management Skill
Motivation is defined as the process of energizing, directing as well as sustaining
employee efforts. The effectiveness of managers is based on the ability to coordinate, direct and
organize the workforce to achieve the organizational goals. The value of motivation as a
management skill cannot be understated in that the ability to motivate the workforce is directly
linked to the success of the manager. Motivation as management skill is important as it support
the improvement in organizational performance, satisfaction, organizational commitment,
supports organizational changes, facilitating direction and utilizing resources effectively.
Motivation is an important management skill as it is linked to improved organizational
performance. Motivation is linked to increased productivity therefore allowing the organization
to achieve higher levels of output. Managers use their motivational skills to encourage their
subordinates to work towards achieving the goals of the organization. Burton (2012) noted that
the motivation seeks to empower the employees to work towards the identified goals and
objectives. Motivation increases the willingness of the individual employee to work and results
in improved efficiency of the individual. Based on the understanding of the motivational theory
X and theory Y motivated employees are able to achieve their goals through focusing their
attention on the objectives set (Dutta & Kant, 2015). The ability of the manager to motivate the
employees results helps to promote self-direction and renewed interests towards achieving the
defined objectives within the organization.
Motivation is related to the development of employee satisfaction and organizational
commitment. Managers capable of motivating their subordinates are able to enhance the overall
