A.Many parts of your paper require information from outside sources (meaning – “not you”). This paper will consist of six REQUIRED written components. Each of these parts should be at least one-half page in length. In addition, you can (but are not required to) have an introduction and a conclusion. This means that the body of the paper should be 3-5 pages in length. If the paper is shorter than 3 pages or longer than 5 pages, points will be deducted. The paper should be written in the order listed in the assignment. Content Requirements 1. Describe what the graphs look like visually. Pretend that the reader is not able to see the graphs and give as much detail as possible. 2. What information are the graphs presenting? What are the graphs telling you about? Take the information that is presented visually and communicate it to the reader in written form 3. What does the information in these graphs mean for the government of Texas versus the government of Massachusetts? How would the residents of each of the states be affected by the information presented in the graphs? 4. Compare the budget of the state of Texas and the budget of the state of Massachusetts. How are the states similar in how they spend money and how are the states different? How would you expect life to be different in Massachusetts compared to Texas based on how the governments spend their money? Base your arguments on the multiple sources provided and not your own “guess 5. Life in Texas and Massachusetts can be very different, but that does not make one superior to the other. Which state is more suitable to live in is determined by how one defines a “quality” life. What factors do you believe would lead to a high quality of life? How you rate different life factors can be your opinion, but the factors you use should be based on research. How do you think living in Texas, and spending by the Texas state government, influence your perspective on what is a “quality” life? 6. Looking back at spending by the states of Texas and Massachusetts what would happen if each state changed its spending priorities. How would you expect altering state spending would harm or enhance the quality of life for people living in that state? Be sure to mention specific spending changes and base your argument on how you would define quality of life. ***Information in these sections should be specific. Avoid phrases like “good,” “bad,” “everyone,” “everything,” “nothing,” and especially “I don’t know.”*** This is a paper about the government. Government has its own vocabulary. Government Spending in Texas and Massachusetts for FY 2018
Question 1
The two graphs are presented in the form of pie charts representing the spending of both Texas
and Massachusetts states for the 2018 Financial Year. Each category of spending is represented in
a different color and labelled, with the spending percentage indicated against every spending
category. The spending categories include; healthcare, education, defense, welfare, protection,
transportation, pensions, interest, general government spending, and other spending. Healthcare
spending is represented in blue, education in dark green, pensions in red, interest in black,
transportation in light blue, other spending in brown, protection light green, defense in medallion,
general government spending in seafoam and welfare in butter. In both stats, healthcare has the
largest share of government spending, with Texas spending 36% on healthcare and Massachusetts
spending 35%. Education is the next largest spending category, with Massachusetts at 14% and
Texas at 25%.
The rest of the Texas government spending categories are represented as follows; pension 13%,
transportation 8%, welfare 6%, protection 4%, other government spending 4%, general
government spending at 2%, interest 1% and defense at 1%. In Massachusetts, transportation is at
12%, welfare 11%, pensions 10%, other government spending 6%, interest 5%, general
government spending 4%, protection 4%, and defense at 0%. The size of the pie allocated to each
category of government spending is representative of the percentage, with healthcare spending
taking the largest chunk of the pie in both graphs.
