Week 11
One of the inspiring articles have come across in the April 5, 2019’s The New York
Times paper concerns the action Boeing has taken after the recent involvement of two of its 737
Max jets in fatal crashes. Boeing said on Friday that it would slow the production of its 737 Max
jets. According to Boeing, the step was taken to establish a new internal committee on safety. In
just five months, two 737 Max jets were involved in fatal crashes. According to the company’s
chief executive, Dennis A. Muilenburg, the production of the 737 families of airplanes will be
reduced from the previous 52 in a month to 42 (Gelles, 2019). In a statement, the chief executive
will also establish a committee on its board of directors. The committee will be responsible for
reviewing how the company develops as well as builds planes. On October 2018, Lion Air Flight
610 which is one of Boeings planes were involved in a crash in Indonesia. The recent crash of
Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 this year has piled enormous pressure on Boeing. The company
brought to a halt the delivery of new planes and grounded Max. As a result, the company has
been stockpiling planes that are finished in Renton as well as the nearby Seattle. In the issued
statement, Mr. Muilenburg said that safety was the company’s responsibility and they own it. He
also promised the airline customers as well as passengers that once the Max returns to the skies,
it will be a safe airplane ever to fly. Max was introduced in 2011 as a strategy to compete with
the company’s European rival, Airbus. At first, Max scrambled to compete with Airbus but later
became the best-selling jet for Boeing with each going for $100 million. The Indonesian and
Ethiopian crashes brought an uproar, and preliminary investigations show that both airplanes
went down due to faulty data that sent the planes into nose dives that were irrecoverable.
Max has a unique anti-stall software called MCAS that compensates for the plane’s larger
and more fuel-efficient engines. According to Mr. Muilenburg, the new anti-stall software at a

hand in the two recent accidents. The chief executive noted that the company had the
responsibility to eliminate the risk and they knew how to do it. After the Lion Air crash, Boeing
engineers started working on a software update but the company, as well as aviation regulators in
various nations, maintained that the Max jets remained safe to fly. Boeing accepts that only a few
pilots had the information concerning the powerful new software before the Indonesian accident
occurred. However, the company said it was possible to tackle a malfunction if pilots keenly
followed instructions it gave after the Indonesian crash. On their side, the Ethiopian authorities
issued a preliminary report after their investigations saying that the pilots in the accident
followed the instructions in the emergency checklist of Boeing, but still the plane crashed. The
misunderstanding between the Ethiopian crash report and Boeing led to the company grounding
the Max. The two recent crashes have led to various countries asking Boeing to compensate them
for the cost they are incurring because of the grounded jets. Also, other nations have cancel...
