Technologies for Erosion Control
Soil erosion refers to the process through which the topsoil of an area is removed and
transported to another place by various agents, known as erosion agents. There are three aspects
that are involved in the process of erosion, the first aspect is the detachment of the soil’s upper
layer. The second aspect is the transportation of the detached soil and the third aspect is the
deposition of the soil in another area. The various agents that are involved in the process of
erosion are; wind, water, ice, and man. The wind blows away loose soil, water washes away the
top layer of soil, ice moves soil during its motions and man loosens the top layer of the soil and
also carries it to other places. Erosion, whether manmade or caused by the natural agents, is often
negative to the landscape and can result in the stripping away of minerals that are vital for
agriculture.
However, it is not always negative and when it happens naturally, it can simply be
viewed as an event of nature. The involvement of man in the process, often accelerating it, is
what causes issues and warrants the use of technological advancements to curb the speed of such
erosion. There are various types of erosion and there are corresponding technologies (both
simple and sophisticated) in place to curb them as discussed in the subsequent sections of this
paper.
Geotextile Fabrics
The first technology that can be used is geotextile fabrics. These are porous fabrics that
can be used with soil to achieve a number of effects. One such effect is to strengthen the topsoil.
They are placed beneath the soil in layers and are often perforated to allow for drainage and
aeration while improving the structural integrity of the soil cover on top.
