Engaging parents in school activities
It is important for teachers to involve parents in school activities and the education of
their children. However, to effectively engage families, schools should understand local
structural, attitudinal and cultural factors that act as barriers to their participation. Successful
parents' engagement programs should consider the cultural values of families, emphasize on
personal contact, facilitate communication, and creates a friendly environment and support
involvement by providing transport and translators. This means that family engagement is only
effective when it foster partnership with parents and achievements in school is seen as a shared
responsibility between teachers, teachers and schools.
Some of the strategies which have successfully ensured that parents are engaged in
school activities are two-way communication, parent education and providing learning activities
for home. First schools should ensure two-way communication. Teachers and the school as a
whole should maintain regular communications channels with messages for the families (Povey,
2013). The parents should be updated regularly about school activities and the progress of the
students. Creating a two-way communication channel between families and teachers or home
and school enable parents and teachers to talk to each other, and this encourages participation.
Holding parent-teacher conferences per annum provide teachers and parents with the opportunity
to meet face to face and discuss the progress of their children besides other school activities.
Parent education encourages parents to take part in school activities. Parent education programs
are held once in a year and each time parents are taught different things about education and
children. Parents suggest the topics which are discussed, and local guest speakers are invited to
speak to the parent about the chosen topics (Povey, 2013). Such programs are sponsored by
schools or district education department to inform parents on various topics such as technology,
