Running head: MOON LANDING

China’s Recent Historic Moon Landing on the Far Side of the Moon

China’s Recent Historic Moon Landing on the Far Side of the Moon
A Chinese spaceship has become the first of its kind successfully land on the far side of
the moon. This is indeed a historic moment in the history of human exploration of space. The touch
down went down in history as one of the most technical feats ever achieved and is primarily seen
as a critical milestone towards the achievement of the country’s substantial ambitions insofar as
the space exploration is concerned.
Is There a Dark Side to the Moon?
The lunar side of the moon is often referred to as the dark side of the moon, though the
dark aspect of it in this respect s often attached to the unseen side and not the lack of light. This
means that both the far and the near side of the moon experiences night and daytime. Since the
phenomenon known as the tidal locking exists, only one face of the moon is often visible from the
earth. This can be explained through the achievement of the earth rotating on its axis as it assumes
the complete orbital rotation (Smith et al., 2010). The other side of the moon is apparently covered
by an old and thick crust that is pocked with highly dense craters.
Ishihara et al. (2009) note that the automated probe Chang’e 4 landed in the South PoleAitken basin; a place is largely known to be unexplored. The spaceship left the biggest impact in
the solar system given the fact that the Far Side of the Moon had not to be explored before. Before
the confirmation of the spacecraft’s landing, the release of the close-up shots of the lunar surface
by the state broadcaster CCTV, most of the details, mission, and timing all being kept a secret.
According to, the landing itself was an impressive achievement (Smith et al., 2010). Martin
Wieser, a renowned scientist, based in the Swedish Institute of Space Physics acknowledged that
the far side of the moon was marked by satellites and orbital images, but that little was known
about it from the space. Being an uncharted territory, the scientist remarks that the discovery
makes the whole milestone an interesting one.

Despite the success story of getting to land on the uncharted lands finally, the Chinese team
was marred by the inability to have direct communication with the spacecraft. This was due to the
fact that the signals from the rover and towards it were obscured by the fact that the halo orbit was
located towards the other side of the moon making it challenging to communicate between the
Earth and the Chang’e. The final phase o...
