Fetal alcohol syndrome is a condition mostly in children that happens when the mother
exposes herself to alcohol during pregnancy. This happens when alcohol enters the bloodstream
of the mother crosses through the placenta to the fetus which is very sensitive to ethanol. The
alcohol is metabolized slower in the fetus leading to a poor delivery of oxygen and other
necessary nutrients to the fetus. This syndrome is seen to cause mental and physical disorders to
the child, although these disorders vary from one child to the other, they cause problems with
copying in life (Streissguth 1997).
