We are doing proofs by contrapositive in my discrete math class. The original statement is "Suppose x is a real number. If (x^3-x)>0, then x>-1."

(x^3-x) > 0

x( x^2 -1) > 0

therefore 

x>0  and   x^2-1

if  x^2-1 >1 

there will be two solution 

 x  > -1 or  x >1
