Jubal Anderson Early was born on November 3, 1816, in the country of Virginia. He was the
third child of a family of ten children. His father was majorly involved in politics in the country.
At the age of Seventeen, Early joined the United States Military Academy. He completed his
studies in 1837, being among the top students in his class.
In 1835, Early enrolled into the third U.S Artillery Regiment. He served in the second Seminole
war for three years. He then quit his job in the military with the goal of pursuing law. He
succeeded in his new career as a lawyer, even to the point of winning for himself an election to
the Virginia House of Delegates in 1841. Later on, he was offered the position of a common
wealth Attorney.
Jubal Early can be said to have had a thing for war since his early days. He was known for his
aggressive personality and a bad temper. He served as a volunteer officer in the MexicanAmerican War, for two years, since 1846.
Early’s first role in the Civil War was as a colonel, having authority over a Virginia Brigade. The
Virginia brigade fought at the First Battle of Bull Run, where they succeeded in driving the
Union Forces off the field. This success led to the promotion of Early to a brigadier general,
shortly after. However, after being wounded in one of the battles, Early was transferred to the
Second Corps, in 1862. There, he played key roles in several battles, succeeding in all to the
point of gaining distinctions and even a division command at the Battle of Antietam. Among the
major Battles led by Early is the December 1862 battle. The Union forces of General George
Meade had made advancements across the Confederate defensive line. Early and his army drove
them back.
On January 1863, Early was appointed as a major general. He had a big involvement in the
Confederate Victory of May, 1863. During the battle of Salem Church, the unit he led d id an
excellent job in delaying the forces of General John Sedgwick and hence hastened a Union
Retreat. His division also took part in fighting for two days, at the battle of Gettysburg, July
1863. In the battle of wilderness, of May 1864, he was appointed as a temporary Corps
commander. Later on, he was appointed as a Lieutenant General, commanding the second corps
