Solve the following for x.

5 − x = 9 + x

5 − x = 9 + x

Grouping like terms to one side of the equation;

5 - 9 = x+x

Note:  -x and 9 change their signs after crossing to the other side of the equality sign.

-4 =2x

-2 =x

Therefore x = -2
