Book Summary
Mixing of theology and philosophy in fictional literature is not a new concept. One of the
teachers and thinkers that have integrated both tools in their books successfully includes C. S.
Lewis in books such as The Chronicles of Narnia which was a children’s series based on the
redemption story by Christ. Similarly, Craig J Hazen has mixed theology in fictional literature in
his book The Five Sacred Crossings. The book is a story concerning Dr. Michael Jernigan, an
old professor who also happens to be Christian. In the book, Dr. Michael Jernigan is depicted as
a nicotine addict who constantly feels the need to quench his habit. The professor agrees to
substitute for a friend who teaches at a community college until she uses up her maternity leave
and returns to work. The course is religious in nature, and it is during the final weeks of the
semester. Although the college is secular, the professor has a religious Class that Dr. Michael
takes over for the time. The Christian college professor introduces a book titled The Five Sacred
Crossings which he had received as a gift during the Vietnam War from the tribal community in
the area he served as an American soldier.
