Preliminary Investigative Report
Introduction
When conducting an investigation, the respective authorizes and stakeholders usually
follow a set of procedures that seek to help them to gather as much information as possible. The
crime investigators typically rely heavily on the available pieces of evidence as well as witness
accounts if any in making the ultimate conclusions. However, in some instances, the available
pieces of evidence may not be sufficient thus creating a need as well as a gap for further analysis.
Some cases may take a short time to resolve due to their pure nature (Brandl, 2017). While
simplicity may not always hold in various instances, the investigators usually rely on the
evidence that links to the underlying incidents.
The simplicity of a case, therefore, comes from the availability of reliable pieces of
evidence to link the culprits to the occurrence of the underlying incident. It then follows that the
investigation processes may come up with various theories that try to explain the occurrence of a
given event based on the available pieces of evidence. The argument that exhibits much weight
as compared to the other based on the available evidence becomes the ultimate conclusion.
However, some of the findings based on such an approach may not always reflect on the real
occurrences of the associated incidents revolving around the case.
This paper focuses on the explanation of various aspects and elements of the case
involving the Michelle O’Connell death of Michelle that occurred 2010 in Florida. The case
presents multiple pieces of evidence and hence theories that experts in the field of criminal
investigations may use to gather and analyze the available facts in the attempt to come up with
the ultimate findings and hence conclusions. This paper in delivering the final analysis and as a

preliminary report highlights the timeline of the occurrence of events of the case, the various
findings that came about as a result of the previous investigations and but not limited to the past
investigative tasks that the associated experts performed driven by the collected evidence.
Timeline of occurrence of events
This section utilizes the timeframe of the presence of various occasions as well as their
relationships based on the case presented. To follow the existence of the incidents in a
chronological manner, this section will outline these events according to their dates of existence.

2nd September 2010. The County Sheriff’ office of St John got a distress call that came
from a man at 4700 Sherlock Place at around 2320 hrs. The male subject claimed that he
believed that his girlfriend had shot herself with his duty firearm. The issue identified
himself as Deputy Jeremy Banks which this paper will henceforth refer to as Banks.
Banks explained that his girlfriend named Michelle O’Connell shot herself with his duty
weapon and was bleeding hence needed immediate assistance (Shoar, n.d.).

On arrival at the scene, the deputies found the two at the master bedroom with blood
flowing out of Michelle O’Connell’s mouth and head. The deputies concluded that
Michelle O’Connell suffered an intra-oral wound but had a radial pulse on her left wrist.

A few moments later, the various medical teams arrived at the residence. The paramedics
moved Michelle O’Connell from her original state in the attempt to initiate and perform
the various lifesaving tasks on her. At this time, the deputies removed Banks from the
residence. However, the paramedics reported that Michelle O’Connell had passed on at
around 2348 hrs. Immediately, the robbery/Homicide detectives were called upon to
secure the area and initiate investigations into the matter.
