Bitmap images are saved as pixels, tiny shapes that are combined to form a larger image.
Object (vector) images are instead mathematical formulae that are used to construct images and shapes.
A vector image can be stored more readily, as it is smaller in file size; bitmap images require information about color to be saved, thus making them larger. Unfortunately, bitmap images are by far the most dominant form of image file on the web.
For corporate logos, object images are optimal. There is little color and usually only a shape/lines to fill. For pictures, especially landscaping, bitmap is preferable.
