Lossless compression technique uses data compression algorithm that warranties the original (same) data to reconstructed from the data compressed. Thus, its useful when a user needs the compressed data to be the same after reconstruction.

  • image file formats e.g. PNG
  • GIF
 Lossy compression technique does not allow an identical data to be reconstructed after compression. Itr is useful in internet applications. For example, media streaming.

  • Lossy technique can produce a much smaller compressed data file compared to lossless technique
  • Lossless compression schemes are reversible so that the original

In practice, lossy data compression will also come to a point where compressing again does not work
