Judy has \$20 and is saving at a rate of \$6 per week.  Ida has \$32 and is spending at a rate of \$4 per week.  After how many weeks will each have the same amount of money?

Let the number of weeks be represented by x

and the amount of money left with them be represented by y.

Judy has \$20 and is saving at a rate of \$6 per week.

Since Judy saves \$6 each week. After x weeks Judy would have saved \$6x. So total amount of money left with Judy after x weeks can be written as

y = 20 + 6x

Ida has \$32 and is spending at a rate of \$4 per week.

Since Ida spends \$4 each week. After x weeks Ida would have spent \$4x. So total amount of money left with Ida after x weeks can be written as

y = 32 - 4x

To find the number of weeks it will take each to have the same amount of money, equate the RHS(right hand side) of the two equations.

20 + 6x = 32 - 4x

6x + 4x = 32 - 20

10x = 12

x = 12/10

x = 1.2 weeks

So after 1.2 weeks both of them will have the same amount of money.
