How the history of policing contribute to racism in the criminal justice system
According to (Macinnis, p. 87), There is overwhelming evidence that the criminal justice system
is a racist one. Most people of a colour have similar stories of being subject to racism in the process
of administration of criminal justice. Of particular concern to most people is the use of the term
“systemic racism” which means that we have systems and institutions that produce racially
disparate outcomes, regardless of the intentions of the people who work in those institutions. When
you consider that much of the criminal justice system was built, honed and firmly established
during the Jim Crow era, a period when almost everyone conceded rife with racism, is just but one
indicator of the racism in the criminal justice system. The modern criminal justice system has
helped preserve the racial order, by keeping the black people in their place. The black people are
perceived to commit more crimes, as compared to their white counterparts. The following issues
show how racism is perpetuated in the criminal justice system (Macinnis, p. 94).
One, policing and profiling. According to research and findings, it was found out that blacks are
almost likely to be pulled over as they drive twice more compared to the whites, even if more
whites drive more on the average. Blacks are more likely to be searched following a stop.
Secondly, more blacks are arrested and charged with misdemeanors, petty crimes and are
vulnerable to driver’s license suspensions. ...
