Troy Maxson, a city sanitary department worker who has just been promoted to driving
the garbage collection truck is keen on teaching his son the struggles of life. This film, directed
by Denzel Washington who also plays the lead role and based on August Wilson’s play of the
same name is a critical review of life of African Americans in the 1950s. The once a baseball
player is a strict father who scolds his son for not helping him build a fence. The temperamental
father is a typical case of a frustrated middle-aged African-American man who strives to provide
for his family through his hardship job. Fences (2016) is an explication of the hardship family
life of African Americans in the mid-century and how these hardships affected family life.
The main theme that Washington brings out in the film adaptation of Wilson’s play is the
theme of conflict. Maxson is the breadwinner of the family and he does so by staying in the
