Solve:     4x - 3y = -17
-7x - 7y = 42

Oct 19th, 2015

Hello!

The second equation, -7x-7y=42, is equivalent to x+y=-6 (divide by -7).

So y=-6-x, substitute it to the first equation:

4x - 3(-6-x) = -17,

7x + 18 = -17, 7x = -35, x = -5.

And y = -6-x = -1.

The answer: x=-5, y=-1.
