Napples was a city founded by the ancient Greeks, who settled in southern Italy. It faces
the Mediterranean Sea and is located near Mount Vesuvius. It has a population of more than 5
million people who are in the urban areas, provincial and municipal areas. It was conquered in by
the Romans in 326 BC and it continued to thieve as rich Romans build holidays villas as it was
along the coast. It also had a busy port which made the cities to thrive well and become the third
largest urban economy in Italy by population. Naples can pride itself for being a modern city
and a major cultural center for art and architecture (Chiosi,2007).
“Decumani” and “Cardini’’
Decumani were roads which were oriented from east to west, they were used mainly in
city planning by the Romans. They were three parallel to each other and to the coast. Usually,
they acted as a connection between port praetorian which was a military camp very close to the
enemy to the porta Decumani which was away from the enemy. Cardini, on the other hand, were
the roads that originated from north to south crossroad street. These two helped divide the city
and form a structure of the city something that is admired even to date (Brambilla et.al 2006).
Influence of the Greek civilization on the Neapolitan area
The Greek had played a huge role in the culture of the Neapolitan city in terms of their
sculpture and architecture. It is one of the cultures that many cultures both modern and old,
